The Landsknechten of the late 15th century are also referred to as "Landsknechts" in English. This term is actually borrowed from German, where it denotes mercenaries or foot soldiers who served princes and armies in the Holy Roman Empire and other parts of Europe during the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The word "landsknecht" itself is a compound of "Land" (referring to the German territory) and "Knecht" (which means 'servant' or 'footman'), and it is commonly used in the English language to refer to this specific group of soldiers.
